Interview with Cathey Mooney: The Legacy of Gee’s Bend Quilting

In the heart of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, a rich quilting tradition thrives, carried forward by artisans who weave history and creativity into every stitch. I had the privilege of speaking with Cathey Mooney, a remarkable quilter whose family legacy spans generations. As the daughter of Mary Major and the granddaughter of Lottie Mooney, Cathey’s journey into quilting began at the tender age of nine, under the guidance of her family.
“Quilting was a family affair,” Cathey recalls with a smile. “We would gather old fabrics and clothes, pick cotton, beat it to soften it, and sew the backings from old sheets. It was a way to create something beautiful and functional out of what we had.”
Today, Cathey continues this tradition, crafting quilt tops from old clothes and donated fabrics. Bold colors and innovative patterns are her trademarks, reflecting the vibrant spirit of her community. Her Etsy shop, “3 Thimbles and a Needle,” showcases her exquisite work, offering a variety of quilts, quilt hangings, and pot holders.
“Creating new patterns is a collaborative effort,” Cathey explains. “My family and I love to get together and let our minds work. It’s a beautiful way to bond and keep our traditions alive.”
One of the highlights of the year for Cathey and her family is the “Airing of the Quilts” festival in Gee’s Bend, an event that attracts quilters and enthusiasts from near and far. The next festival is scheduled for October 12, 2024, promising a vibrant display of craftsmanship and community spirit.
For those in the area, Cathey will be showcasing her quilts at the West Homewood Farmers Market tomorrow. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet her, purchase unique handmade items, and even donate fabric to support her work. “Donations mean a lot to us,” she says. “We use whatever we get to create something new and beautiful.”
At home, Cathey’s quilting room is a hive of activity. She often collaborates with her sister and cousin on larger projects, valuing the time spent together and their shared faith in God. “Quilting is more than a craft,” Cathey reflects. “It’s a way to connect with family, honor our heritage, and express our faith.”
Through her dedication and artistry, Cathey Mooney not only preserves the rich legacy of Gee’s Bend quilting but also infuses it with new life and creativity. Her work stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition and community.
