Popwells Produce is a family owned farm in Clanton, Alabama. The farm was started in 2007 after Denise Popwell welcomed her second child of their family and decided to start farming so she could stay at home to take care of the kids. Denise was raised by her grandparents that were also farmers, so farming was already second nature to her. Her husband, Allen Popwell, works in construction, while Denise handles most of the farming. They grow a wide variety of produce including pink-eyed peas, lady peas, butter beans, peaches, tomatoes, squash, plums, blackberries, and more. They also grow a variety of pumpkins for the fall season.
The mission of our market is to become champions of taking care of Alabama’s land and animals, and to educate and encourage others to do the same. When asked what would you like to say to others who are wanting to farm, or start growing their own produce, Denise Popwell responded, "Farming is hard work, but it's a labor of love. I would encourage anybody, no garden is too big or too small. I would encourage anyone to start, even if it's just one tomato plant, or one squash plant, you have to start somewhere. To see a seed grow into a plant to form produce coming off go it, it's amazing to watch!"
